The Regulation - What's happening?

From October 2011, new legislation means that water and sewerage companies will be responsible for repairs to all shared sewers (even on private land), and for all drains beyond a private property boundary.

For the resident it becomes fairer, and they have less to worry about as they now only have responsibility for their own drains, those that serve just their home or property. They are only responsible up to the connection even if they connect with another drain on their property.

Some properties are connected to a private pumping station before they connect into the main sewer network. It is likely you will know this already if this is the case. Examples of these situations include small housing developments, remote farms and small business parks.

Private sewage pumping stations are not included in the transfer on October 2011 but it is proposed that these will gradually transfer to Water Companies by October 2016. Until this time, the owner(s) of the pumping station will continue to be responsible for its maintenance and repair.

How it will affect you.

How you will be affected by the transfer of private sewers depends on the type of property you live in - this is due to the way the sewers and drains are connected.
